On being a scholar

I've heard several people now describe the shift that comes during graduate study from being a student to being a scholar/teacher/academic. Yesterday at the Fellows Convocation here at SU I heard the one I like the best so far, from Scott Pitnick, Professor of Biology:

... going from someone who reads to someone who is read.

Occasionally I google the names of people I know. Just searched on "Karl Dykema", my father, and came upon your research plan of March, 2005. It seems a little arcane to study Porter Perrin, and secondarily, my father's contributions to linguistics, but if I can be of help let me know.
