writings

An essay on genre and community writings is my next project. I am going to be looking at the way in which periodicals function in my old Latino neighborhood in an attempt to discover the genre utilized to construct the identities and the behaviors of the readership. I will begin with Devitt's book on writing genres, and hope that will light the way top other publications that can help me formulate exactly what I want to write about.

genre and language

So while I whine about not being able to read text that have not been assigned; and my summer course is coming to a close; and my final papers are all but done, guess what I am looking forward to doing? Using c-map to begin charting my next paper that I hope to complete at the end of the fall semester! What is amazing is that I am finally starting to feel like I have something worthwhile to say. And, (although this is kind of cheating) I get to be the smart kid in the class next semester because I have taken a few classes more in CCR
then my new colleagues, and have some idea of what is going on. At any rate, I am looking forward to finding an essay that will ground me (in my program) and getting my hands on the texts that promise to make me feel right at home. Currently, Senor Victor Villanueva is my idol, and I am hoping to someday have the pleasure of meeting him in person. At any rate, I have gone from wishing the semester would end so I could do nothing, to wishing the semester would end so I can plan my next project. So this is what it's like to be a burgeoning scholar... Methinks I like it!

what a difference a day makes

Lately, I've been feeling kinda blue, but someone I have great respect for reminded of all the things I have to be grateful for and what a terrific life I have compared to so many other people in the world. Her words acted as salve on my wounds; some folks just know all the right things to say. So as I reflect on my life, I am very thankful to have healthy children, awesome friends, compassionate and (super) intelligent professors, and the next few years of my life to achieve my personal dream of getting a Ph.d.

Not bad for a day's work, huh? Or as my grandmother would say...
no hay mal que por bien no venga.
Translation- (non-literal) every cloud has a silver lining.
Translation- (literal) there are no wrongs from which rights have not been born.

is it really 2005?

Will the real 21st century please show up! There is something inherently wrong within the education system when we begin thinking that any books we disagree with should be banned! As a parent I am saddened that the voice of some parents can cause the absence of certain books for all students within a classroom. The criminal? The Buffalo Tree by Adam Rapp.

In keeping with A.J....

This quiz is short, fun, and cute! And, AJ, like you, they didn't have my favorite color either...
